This must be the day for astounding, unbelievable news. First up is the revelation that many of the same Democrats who ripped Republican senatorial candidate Dan Coats last year for being a lobbyist-- better sit down for this -- are backing Democrat gubernatorial candidate John Gregg, a registered lobbyist in Indiana. Gasp! Hypocrisy! In politics!
Andy Downs, director of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, said some voters might find it interesting, though not especially unexpected, that Republicans and Democrats seem to have swapped positions on lobbying.
Ah, come on, Andy, don't sound so world-weary. Couldn't you work up even a little chagrin? Of course, Democrats aren't the only ones in a bind. The Republicans who last year spent so much time, energy and political capital defending Coats' lobbying can't really say much about Gregg's lobbying now. Playing the hypocrisy card is the best they can do, and that won't exactly tarnish Gregg.
In this morning's Journal Gazette, meanwhile, syndicated columnist Eugene Robinson says he is shocked -- shocked, I say, shocked and dismayed! -- at the behavior of IMF head:
It's almost enough to give socialism a bad name.
We don't know whether Dominique Strauss-Kahn — who heads the International Monetary Fund and, until a few days ago, was likely to be the Socialist Party candidate for president of France — is guilty of the alleged sexual assault for which he was arrested. Like anyone, he is presumed innocent until court proceedings prove otherwise.
We do know, however, that at the time of the reported incident on Saturday, Strauss-Kahn was resident in a $3,000-a-night luxury suite at a posh midtown Manhattan hotel. We also know that when he was taken into police custody hours later, aboard a Paris-bound jetliner that was moments from takeoff at John F. Kennedy International Airport, police found him comfortably ensconced in the first-class cabin.
I didn't think this was how socialists were supposed to roll.
Come on, Eugene, are you serious? Isn't this some elaborate satire I'm not clever enough to grasp? How can anyone looking at the last 100 years or so be the least bit surprised at a socialist who preaches "what's mine is yours and what's yours is mine" but makes sure he gets enough of yours to live the a lavish lifestyle?
And, finally, the biggest stunner of all. A politician turns out to be a pig:
Mildred Patricia Baena is the woman with whom former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger fathered a son about 14 years ago, ABC News has learned.
Known as Patty, she reportedly worked in the famliy home as a housekeeper and assistant for more than 20 years, until January.
Here I go sounding like a pig myself, but when you saw that woman, did you mentally compare here to Maria Shriver and go, "Oh come on!"? It's further proof, as if we need it, that men sometimes value newness over everything, even basic sex appeal. Or maybe she was a lot hotter 14 years ago and just didn't age well.
