God's law

A letter to the editor in the South Bend Tribune asks council members to do the impossible:

I attended Common Council meetings last year and was extremely disappointed by several of our representatives. Some council members voted by their proclaimed religious beliefs. If a council member cannot do his or her job, which is to represent all of the citizens of South Bend, they should not be on the council. Not everyone's religious belief is the same as Henry Davis Jr. and Tim Rouse, whose religious views guided their votes against the human rights ordinance.

Even if I don't like your religious beliefs, I can't ignore the fact that they're probably the greatest contributor to your world view. Asking you to set them aside when you consider legislation would be pointless and absurd. I can hold you to constitutional standards whether your religion recognizes them or not, but that's something different.
