If we're going to make "hate crimes" more serious than other crimes and give the perpetrators "enhanced" sentences, shouldn't we do the same for people who falsely claim to be the victims of hate crimes?
CARMEL, Ind. -- The owners of a Carmel deli who claimed they were the victims of a hate crime were arrested in New Jersey this week, accused of arranging the fire that damaged the eatery.
Heidi's Brooklyn Deli owner Jasvir Singh Dosanjh, 47, and his daughter Gugu Kaur, 21, both of Indianapolis, were arrested Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport as they were returning from a wedding in India.
Police say the two plotted the fire that severely damaged the restaurant on Oct. 31. Kaur told reporters at the time that her family was the victim of a hate crime, referring to racist messages spray-painted in the deli. But police didn't buy it.
If they're found guilty, give them whatever time the crime of arson warrants, doubled.
