A new poll conducted for the Club for Growth showed Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) and his primary challenger, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, in a statistical dead heat.
Mourdock had a small advantage over Lugar, 34 percent to 32 percent, in the Basswood Research poll released Tuesday. But Mourdock's 2-point lead is within the poll's 4.4-point margin of error.
We should probably be at least a little skeptical of the poll. The Club for Growth hasn't actually endorsed Mourdock, but it's come out with a strong anti-Lugar. Still, it's interesting.
And there is this:
Sen. Richard this year has raised more than three times the amount of large-dollar donations from Hoosiers than either his Democratic or Republican opponents, according to recent disclosure reports.
Lugar had a large cash advantage at the end of June, with $3.5 million in his campaign account, compared with $213,583 for Republican state Treasurer Richard Mourdock and $685,838 for Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly.
Man, that's a big advantage. No matter what Mourdock throws at Lugar, the senator can punch back 10 times over.
