Stealth nominee?

Who says we can never get over our Red State-Blue State divide? With his selection of Harriet Miers to fill Sandra Day O'Connor's seat, President Bush seems to have united many on the left and the right. Lots of reaction in this nice roundup from the Wall Street Journal. And let's not forget Bush's other nominee, who took over the court yesterday.

On Miers, I'm one of the observers who worries about her -- I truly would like to see not just a change in the Supreme Court's direction but in its culture, becoming an instituion that considers the law through the filter of the Constitution, not a Super Legislature that tries to change American society. But unless I learn otherwise, I'm inclined to give Bush the benefit of the doubt. He has said over and over what he wants for the court. He seems to have been faithful to that vision in his choice of Roberts, and he has known Miers a long time and presumably knows well what her political philosophy is. Besides, those who bet against Bush's political savvy usually end up losing.
