Among all respondents to the Pew Research Center survey, 57% say they have not lived in the U.S. outside their current state: 37% have never left their hometown and 20% have left their hometown (or native country) but not lived outside their current state.
I grew up in a remote rural area where it was common to find people who had never strayed more than a few miles from where they were born. I supposed my upbringing was uncommon in that respect, if not rare. But more than a third of Americans have never left their hometowns. Are they likely to be narrow and provincial people, or has the communications revolution lessened that probability?
