Opening Arguments

Ask the fans

Why doesn't someone ask Wizards fans what they think about a new baseball stadium downtown? New-stadium backers hope a move would increase the fan base, but it certainly won't work without the current fans, so their opinions matter more than most people's. It would seem to be a simple matter to hand out cards at a game or two with these options: Would you like the stadium to remain where it is, or would you prefer it downtown?

I only go to occasional games but it seems that somewhere along the line, the taxpayer will have to pay for part of this. I have heard an overwhelming majority of people against this. I think it's a good idea if it is a multi use facility. Randy Brown expanded the coliseum but not parking and the concerts we get aren't any better than what we got before so I don't see as how those nose bleed seats helped any. With the baseball stadium right next to the coliseum there is not enough parking. Build a parking garage there. But $5 million dollars to fix the ballpark? I don't think so. Let the fans pay for it. Something that would attract more people downtown might be a waterpark and a shopping tower.
