Burn, baby, burn

Oh, please:

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry is asking Fort Wayne residents to consider a "green" alternative to the traditional leaf collection this fall: mulching leaves on site in the yard.

Instead of raking all leaves to the park strip for pick-up, City residents can mow through the leaves, leaving them to biodegrade in the lawn and providing extra nutrients for the grass and soil. Turf experts from Purdue and Michigan State have found this to be an effective method for managing leaves.

It ain't about green -- it's about the city looking for ways to save money by not picking up leaves. And going from three leaf pickups to two is a perfectly reasonable way for the city to save a little. It doesn't have to be justified on any other grounds.

Doesn't it take a special type of lawn mower to do mulching ? Wonder how many people have those ?

With most mowers you can put on "mulching" blades, but they don't always work real well.

We have a mulching mower already, so that part (to us) is academic.

As to leaf "burning"...I do it from time to time in my fire pit, as long as the leaves are dry - wet leaves make too much smoke, and I'm NOT trying to signal the tribe out on the plains anyway...NOR am I electing a new Pope.

(But I never said that...and I was never here)
