Death Watch

The Rocky Mountain News in Denver is gone now, and now we have a list of the 10 major daily newspapers that are most likely to fold or shutter their print editions:

The properties were chosen on the basis of the financial strength of their parent companies, the amount of direct competition they face in their markets and industry information on how much money they are losing. Based on this analysis, it's possible that 8 of the nation's 50 largest daily newspapers could cease publication in the next 18 months.

On the list are papers such as the New York Daily News, the Philadelphia Daily News, the Miami Herald, the Boston Globe, the Detroit News and The San Francisco Chronicle. The one I would miss the most is the Chicago Sun-Times. I'm old enough to remember when three newspapers were still duking it out in the Windy City and Mike Royko was the star of the Chicago Daily News.
