Down to two

It's going to be a long, long, looooong season for IU basketball fans:

Add Brandon McGee to the list of Indiana University basketball players who will not be returning next season.

IU coach Tom Crean announced Thursday that McGee, a 6-7 sophomore forward from Chicago, had been dismissed from the team for "academic and team guideline negligence."

[. . .]

He joins guards Armon Bassett and Jamarcus Ellis, and forward DeAndre Thomas as players who have been dismissed from the IU team this spring. In addition, center Eli Holman asked to be released from his scholarship last month and transferred to the University of Detroit.

McGee's dismissal leaves IU with eight scholarship players for next season, including just two who were on last year's roster: guard Jordan Crawford and forward Kyle Taber.

Sigh. Only two left from last season. But to tll you the truth, I like what Crean seems to be doing. He appears serious about discipline and academic standards and making the players behave. Perhaps this will be the start of putting basketball in perspective so we can quit making it the tail that wags the academic dog.

Nah.
