Flying fun

One more reason to drive, or just stay home, for the holidays

The number of people buying plane tickets may be down, but that's not stopping the nation's airports from getting all gussied up in their holiday best. And while everyone's budget is tighter than usual, travelers will still find plenty of airports hosting contests, carolers, karaoke and opportunities for a last-minute heart-to-heart with Kris Kringle. Here's a sampling of what's in store.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, the Indianapolis International Airport is hosting Pups, Popcorn & Perfect Pitch in the airport's pre-security Civic Plaza. In addition to free treats from Indianapolis-based Just Pop In!, there will be two "petting" zoos: one with instruments from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) and another with adoptable animals from the Humane Society of Indianapolis. The airport's month-long entertainment schedule includes jazz, classical and world music and closes out on Dec. 24 with a Santa Tuba Ensemble.

Oh, boy, Santa Tubas and a petting zoo. Just what I want when I'm trying desperately to get to gate A-!2 before my connecting flight takes off. They think we want fun at the airport? Are they out of their tiny little minds?
