Opening Arguments

Good way to start the day

Rush Limbaugh, the piker, is celebrating his 20th year of radio syndication ths week. These guys, though they've been syndicated only since 1995, have been together on the air for 25 years. And, yes, I am a fan:

Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold, the creators and hosts of the long-running "Bob & Tom Show," have renewed their long-term contract with Premiere Radio Networks.

The deal means the Indianapolis-based duo will continue syndication of "The Bob & Tom Show" on more than 150 radio stations from 6 to 10 a.m. The show is broadcast in Central Indiana on Q95 (WFBQ-FM).

Some of my colleagues listen to NPR in the morning because it's so classy. Many staffers listen to WOWO because it's the station with the most local news. I listen to Bob & Tom -- if you're going to face a day of people being far too serious about Very Serious Issues, why not start it with a laugh or two? Some of the B&T show is a little hard to take. The sex jokes are tedious -- body parts, hee, hee; bodily functions, hee, hee, hee; men and women doing things to each other, hee, hee, hee, hee. It's all very high-schoolish. And I could do without some of the prerecorded bits with the canned laughter.  But when the four of them -- Bob and Tom, Kristi Lee and Chick McGee -- just start riffing on something, it's good, clean, demented fun.

A lot of good comedians pass through Indianapolis on the comedy-club circuit, which means they enhd up on the B&T show. That's the first place I learned that Kevin Pollak is not just an actor. He started out as a standup comedian, and as an impressionist he does a killer Jack Nicholson, William Shatner, Alan Arkin, Peter Falk and, of course, Christopher Walken.

Listening to them is like the same thing over and over and over, daily. And that laugh track. It's surely a laugh track, isn't it?
