Opening Arguments

It's a party, kids!

We've all heard about parents who try to ease their children into alcohol by supervising their parties and monitoring their drinking. Somebody usually tries to make the argument for that practice by pointing out that in France, after all, kids even drink wine at the dinner table. But a story like this is so creepy that it knocks all the props out from under that position:

West Bend — A 36-year-old Kewaskum mother is accused of serving champagne and Mike's Hard Lemonade to 10 children - ages 11 to 14 - attending a sleepover birthday party for her 12-year-old daughter at a West Bend hotel, police said Tuesday.

Sarah A. Shay has been given 10 municipal citations accusing her of serving alcoholic beverages to minors at the Dec. 18 party at Hampton Inn Hotel, 1975 S. 18th Ave., Police Chief Kenneth Meuler said in a news release Tuesday. Shay faces a fine of $681 on each of the citations.

Hope she at least had the sense to take their car keys before the party started. She should have extra charges added just for serving champagne and Mike's Hard Lemonade at the same party.

Tim:
And unfortunately, you can't seem to legislate against it, either.
Bring back the pillory..or the public dunking stool!
We can STILL humiliate them, right?
