Opening Arguments

Megacrite

I usually avoid commenting of "family values hypocrites," because the left does such a good job of bashing them, and there are plenty of hypocrites out there of all political persuasions. But this guy is just beyond the pale:

Vito Fossella built a career as a staunch "family values" pol, polishing his image in his predominantly Catholic district with a string of anti-gay votes.

He even shuns his gay sister, Victoria Fossella, refusing to go to family events if she and her partner attend, a source close to the family said.

This is the guy who had a DUI, then had to confess to having a 3-year-old child with his mistress. Which threatens marriage more? People like Fossella or people like his sister? Easy answer.

You're not thinking right, Leo. It was only a few weeks ago that another N-S columnist expressed his preference for people who set high standards and sometimes fail to live up to them over those who don't.

And I think having a child with one's mistress qualifies you as a supporter of the "culture of life."

Off to re-education camp for you!

Another dog bites man story. Let's hear about a rabid right-winger who froths at the mouth about homosexuality and actually has a healthy sex life with no one but his own frumpy spouse. I can see a Pulitzer in it for you, Leo.

I'd give him a pass on his marital relations. He's representing a district that's highly Catholic.

When I went to a RC university, the Roman Catholic students there explained to me that protestants engage in serial marriage, and that roman catholics do the same thing, but aren't allowed to divorce and remarry.

It appears that his "wife" is his ex-wife, for all practical purposes. They are childless, so they don't need to discuss the kids, and they don't talk to each other about anything else. It also appears that his girlfriend is his wife, for all practical purposes. He told officers he was headed to pick up his sick kid, which seems to be the truth. Sounds like he's trying to be a good dad, which is far more the heart of "family values", as far as I am concerned, than are the papers filed at the courthouse.

If he's not on good terms with his sister because she's gay, that's NOT good "family values" - but is that the reason, or is that just a coincidence? I have a brother who's been nasty to me since I was born; I decided about a decade ago that he wasn't about to mend his ways, and I was stupid to put myself in harm's way. It has nothing to do with his sexuality; as far as I know (thank you, Hillary), he's straight but not narrow.

Fossella recently wrote an op-ed piece for the NY Post supporting a permanent reauthorization for FISA. Now, there is a reason to rake him over the coals.

And, of course, drunk driving.

If someone in North Webster or Woodburn were to be caught driving drunk in an emergency, I could have a little compassion for them, but in New York, there's no shortage of available options - bus, subway, taxi - for a drunk driver to get around. Risking other peoples' lives is not "family values" as far as I'm concerned.
