Middle of the pack

Never mind that Brick, N.J., and Amherst, N.Y., have been rated the safest two cities in the country and that St.  Louis and Detroit the two most dangerous (the two World Series cities; go figure). Fort Wayne is No. 169 on the list (which goes from No. 1 as the safest to 371 as the most dangerous). That could lead to an interesting mayoral debate, depending on who wants to downplay crime and who wants to highlight it. Being 169 is no great advertisement, but it's better than any other Indiana city rated except Evansville (159). South Bend is No. 275, Hammod is 285, Indianapolis is 320 (guess all those press reports of a crime wave aren't just hype) and Gary slips badly but still barely holds its spot in the bottom 10 at No. 362.

Leo:
I read the same number for Fort Wayne....169. But then I heard on TV that it was 203...?!?

Now either someone got their numbers confused (big time), or we had one helluva crime wave last week that I must have missed...!

Bob: The list I used ranked the cities from No. 1 (the safest) to No. 371 (the most dangerous). But some stories start from the most dangerous end and count back toward the safest. In other words, Fort Wayne is the 169th safest city in the country or the 203rd most dangerous, depending on which end of the list you are counting from. Either way you look at it, we don't exactly shine.

Got it....the old "glass half empty or
glass half full" reasoning....that accounts for the two numbers. I should have caught that.

I wonder if variables OTHER than the obvious ones cited (by Quinto) were taken into account...

I've done a little sociological archaeology and dug up some interesting aspects that MANY of these "most dangerous" cities ALL have in common as far as specific demographics, percentage of rental properties, downtown stadiums (vbeg), and the like...

I've also been in and around Brick Twnshp, New "Joisey" in the 90s, and it was damn nice back then! Nice to know they must be doing SOMETHING right all these years!

Like to see the Summit City take a page from THEIR book...that's for sure!
