Need coffee. Now!

I've been hearing these annoying ads for the 5-Hour Energy drink on radio lately, going on and on about what a hassle coffee is -- you have to brew it or buy it, wait for it, fix it up and blah, blah, blah. But, instead, we could just be throwing down a shot of this booster and be good to go instantly, just like people do 7 million times a day! But I don't consider coffee a hassle -- it's a ritual, and I like my rituals. It makes a nice sound while it's brewing, and it smells wonderful. Fixing it up with just the right amount of creamer and sweeter is part of my well-ordered morning, and filling my Thermos with it is the last sign that I'm finally ready to head off for work. Now I'm getting some backup from a well-known advocacy group:

Consumer Reports says 5-hour Energy, which costs about $3 a shot, will probably chase away grogginess, but so will a cup of coffee, and it costs a lot less. The label cautions that women who are pregnant or nursing should not try it, as well as children under 12.

Yeah. Silly caffeine-addict pushers.

I had to get a blood test today, which required 12 hours of fasting beforehand, which included any liquids except a "small amount" of water. So on the way home from the blood test around noon, I swung through Mickey D's for a Big Mac and fries and took them home and washed them down with a gallon of hot coffee. "So this is what it's like to wake up at noon," I thought. "Have't done that since my college days. Wonder what I wrote this morning?"

Awake now, though!

There are some things that require a ritual, coffee being one of them--and that first sip is so satisfying. Another activity that requires ritual is wine drinking; there's something about uncorking and pouring into a wine glass. Then you get to watch the light sparkle through the glass and into the wine. Yum!!
