One day in Fort Wayne

Blogger and former Indianapolis Star columnist Ruth Holladay recalls the visit to Fort Wayne by Martin Luther King in 1963, when she was a junior at Concordia Lutheran High School:

From what I understand, after looking on Google today, there was no immediate coverage by the local press at the time. However, stories eventually were written in the News Sentinel about King's appearance; they did not run until January, and I am mightily curious about that. I know those articles are available through the Fort Wayne libraries, and I hope to access them someday. I'd like to read about what the man said in Fort Wayne in 1963.

I, too, am curious about the lack of immediate coverage, if that is so.

That story sounded a little hinky to me, so I asked my mother. She attended the 1963 rally at the Shrine Auditorium and remembers it well.

She says no way there was no media coverage.

Does the News-Sentinel still have its morgue and still give free access to staff? Hope you'll check into it, Leo.

Nothing here yet? Thought fer sher we'd have redeemed the News-Sentinel and Journal-Gazette by now. Back in 1963 they actually had some real news hounds working for them.
