Opening Arguments

One for tw

Mayor Tom Henry is batting .500 this week. His hit: Originating the bid proposal that landed the 2012 Democratic State Convention for downtown Fort Wayne, marking the first time for the convention to be held outside Indianapolis:

It is expected to bring in 2,000-2,500 conventioneers and their families and friends. At the convention, the Democratic Party will elect its national delegates for the 2012 general election.

According to Visit Fort Wayne, the city's convention and visitors bureau, the event should generate $350,000-$400,000 in business over the weekend.

But that's what, between $100 and $200 spent by each person over three days? Not exactly party animals.

The mayor's miss is the call for creation of a Fort Wayne City Court.

Didier said during his remarks that he was “pretty supportive” of the creation of a City Court, which would handle certain types of misdemeanors, infractions and alleged violations of city ordinances. But he took the five members to task for not including all nine council members in the deliberative process of bringing the ordinance forward for discussion.

“I wanted to really get a little bit better look at what City Court would entail, and how it would work. I wanted to get a little bit more input from (Allen Superior Court Judge) Fran Gull and our prosecutor (Karen Richards),” Didier said.

For the record, Gull and Richards are strongly against the proposal, so their counsel should be sought, right? That will be difficult, since this ordinance, never even heard of last week, now has to be passed by the end of the year. I don't even care what the arguments for and against a city court might be. It's one more piece of complicated, controversial legislation introduced by the Henry administration at the last minute with the breathless warning that -- hurry, hurry, hurry! -- it has to be passed right now! That crap is getting old, and this measure ought to be voted down just to get that point across.

"vote this measure down just to get that point across".

Nifty logic Leo. Of course, having a city court could generate $3 million or so a year....thus reducing taxes..apparently you are against that idea.
