Opening Arguments

Opening up

Hear, hear: Under an ordinance proposed by City Councilman Mitch Harper, R-4th, city government would have to post online a monthly report on its spending for goods and services.

If enacted, the measure would continue a tack toward compelling greater disclosure this council has pursued.

Responding to an earlier Harper initiative, Fort Wayne city administration now submits a monthly report on cash flow, department by department. And Councilwoman Liz Brown, R-at large, won passage of an ordinance that compels the city administration to report its consultant contracts.

And County Auditor Lisa Blosser's commitment to open government won some deserved praise today in a
Journal Gazette editorial.
When an ordinance to require online posting claims of more than $300 from vendors was stalled, she just started posting them on her own.

A lot of candidates made a lot of pledges about open and transparent government when they're seeking office. It's good to see actual movement toward it in the city and county at the same time.
