I stopped by the liquor store after work yesterday to pick up a bottle of wine. Walking in, I reached to have my driver's license and debit card ready to plop down on the counter, as I always do. No driver's license. I did a thorough search -- twice -- through all my pockets, then looked through the car. No license. This brought two thoughts. 1. It is going to be an incredible hassle to prove my identity to get another license if I can't find mine, since the most common way of proving identity is a driver's license. 2. No wine for me tonight! How dare those pointy headed dimwits in Indianapolis pass a law requiring an old fart like me to show a state-issued photo ID to buy a bottle of wine.
You may recall that I have written both editorials and blog posts about this new requirement, pooh-poohing the idea that it would be an inconvenience. I said things like:
Common sense and my experience with the law so far tell me those who sell liquor like the law just the way it is. Requiring ID from everybody takes all the guesswork out of it and reduces the chances of mistakenly selling booze to minors.

Of all the things that complicate our lives, this one has to be near the bottom of the list.
Yeah, well, that was before I found my driver's license the next morning next to my parking spot in front of the house, after a night that included a fine meal without wine. Busybody nanny state fascists.
So what can we say about me? A libertarian is a statist dupe who just lost his driver's license?

It would have been rather ironic to drive by and see you begging some college kid with a valid I.D. to "score ya some wine".
Which brings up another question, seeing as we want to make sure this new legislation is really "bulletproof", and we don't have NEAR enough laws on the books already, what do they charge a guy with who is trying to get someone to buy him booze cuz he lost his photo i.d.?

It's an incredibly stupid law in a state that has no shortage of them. I'm 60 now, for crying out loud. There's several alcohol laws in this state that, if changed, would mean the end of the world, like the world has ended in neighboring states. It has, hasn't it?
Car seats until a child is 8? Yet, no helmets for motorcycle riders?Not sure, is there still no seatbelt requirement in trucks?
Considering no smoking ban. Well, not casinos.
