Feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

An insurance company report ranks Fort Wayne as the 15th safest large U.S. city to drive in and Indianapolis the 46th safest.

The report released Thursday by Allstate Insurance Co. ranked the 200 largest U.S. cities on the frequency of car collisions.

I know the numbers don't lie and we shouldn't base too much on subjective judgments, but this doesn't seem right to me. Or maybe I've just run into more than my share of highway maniacs. According to the report, the average driver in the U.S. will experience an auto collision every 10 years. For For Wayne drivers, it's 11.6 years, and for Indy ones 10.3 years. Doesn't seem like such a big difference when it's put that way.

The car in front of you has his left turn signal on, and has had for the last three miles? About 12.9% of the US population is over 65, but here in Pennsylvania, it's 15.0%.

You get annoyed when you're stuck behind a school bus? Well, there are a whole lot more horse-drawn vehicles here Lancaster County than there are in Milan Center, and because the land's not flat, we can't see to pass them.

You know how you speed up on an acceleration ramp, and then the car in front of you, the driver gets cold feet and hits the brake instead of gunning it and merging? Here in Pennsylvania, they put STOP SIGNS at the top of ramps, and they ENFORCE the stop signs, the stupid gits.

I'm not saying that the Summit City has no idiot drivers at all, and that law against barefoot driving is almost as dumb as the lack of an open container law, but after driving most of the Northwest Territory, I used to think Dayton had some of the stupidest drivers in the country, but now that I live in Lancaster, I feel homesick for Dayton drivers. And I feel homesick for the low auto insurance rates I paid when I lived in Milan Township.

These days, I make a point of only leaving the house when the streets are dead empty. It's just not *safe* out there.
