Small blessings

How depressing. There are still four NFL teams without a win -- the Rams, the Vikings, the Dolphins and the Colts. Who'd have thought at the beginning that we'd have to be grateful for even this small crumb?

The Peyton Manning-less Colts are the most likely team to shed the title of "winless" first.

[. . .]

However, I don't believe that this is a turnaround moment for them.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Colts sitting at 2-4 heading into Week 7 against the Saints, where I believe Drew Brees will tear them apart.

Well, that good feeling didn't last long, did it? My friend the Lions fan is trying to be sympathetic, but I can tell her heart isn't really in it. She stuck with the Lions all those years, even through their winless season, and now she's watching her team with something close to awe. She says sticking with the Colts through the lean times will build my character. Uh-huh.

We can survive with no defense, we can survive with no running game, but we can't survive without Peyton.
On the bright side, consider how many top draft picks we'll get next year.

While Curtis Painter is no Peyton Manning and obviously never will be, the Colts problems yesterday were not at quarterback, but on defense, and, to a lesser extent, the receiving corps.

Not to throw cold water on optimism for next season, but top draft picks rarely can turn a team around in one year. Better to hope for a complete recovery for Peyton and a return to form for the rest of the team for any quick turnaround.
