Snack city

This is interesting:

The Fort Wayne community likes its food fast, according to a new report by Bundle.com.

[. . .]

In its report “Fast food nation: the cities that spend the most on fast food,” the website collected information for the largest 100 cities in the United States.

[. . .]

According to its data, Fort Wayne ranked 5th out of the 100 cities for the most money spent on fast food compared to the national average.

Bundle.com said consumers' money spent on fast food is 1.78 times the national average.

Not sure why that might be. I don't think we're lazier than the average city, and we're certainly not busier. It can't be because we don't have other choices -- for a city this size, we've always had a high number of good

Actually, I'd say that Fort Wayne probably has more good full-meal restaurants per capita than any city I can think of. Columbus comes close; they have many wonderful Chinese restaurants.

I think the statistical fluke is due to Pizza Hut. In most cities, there's a large Italian population, and zillions of small italian restaurants getting the business that Pizza Hut gets in Fort Wayne. They aren't fast-food anyway, but the folks at Bundle think of Pizza Hut as a delivery chain, not as a sit down restaurant where the waitress brings cavatini, salad, and a pitcher or beer. Anywhere other than Fort Wayne, Pizza Huts have plastic roofs and crappy food.

I suppose Wichita also is in the top 10 list because of Pizza Hut as well; their spending also outpaces the number of transactions. That's not true of, say, Akron or Madison.

Doggone it, Leo, you've got me thinking about the grilled veal sandwiches at Acme, a steak at Nick & Von's, greek salad at The Factory. I'm hungry - and there are a couple of great pho houses in Lancaster, but most restaurants seem to cater to tourists, offering mediocre food at high prices.

I always knew you were an oddball, Harl. Of course it must be the breaded tenerloin at Acme, the rib basket at Nick & Von's and the casaburo salad at Casa's.
