Tough love

A little "praise Buddha and pass the ammunition" from the Dalai Lama:

Speaking Tuesday night at the University of Southern California, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said the al Qaeda chief, responsible for the deaths of thousands, likely deserved his fate.

"In the case of Bin Laden, his action was of course destructive and the September 11 events killed thousands of people. So his action must be brought to justice," the Dalai Lama said, according to a summary of his remarks posted on his website.

"If something is serious and it is necessary to take counter-measures, you have to take counter-measures" he was quoted as saying - a surprising message from a man known across the planet as a harbinger of compassion.

Way to speak it, brother. "Counter-measures" is a much better euphemism than "kinetic military action." Can a Buddhist become the Navy SEALS chaplain, I wonder?

On the other hand, I have a minor quibble with the word "justice". We didn't bring Bin Laden before a court and judge him; we killed him instead.

Both US and international law specify that killing someone who is not taking an active part in the hostilities is a war crime. Specific examples of not taking active part include sickness, wounded, detained, etc. They say of the four killed, only one was armed.

I shed no tears for Bin Laden, but there's no pretending that we're the guys in the white hats any more.
