J'accuse, he alleged

OK, this is really, really nitpicky. This headline about about a southern Indiana crime caught my eye:

Indiana man tells officers why he allegedly stabbed his brother

It's annoyed me for years the way journalists throw "alleged" around because they think it has some magic power to keep them from getting sued. They use it even when doing so takes them into tortured linguistic grotesqueness. The headline above makes absolutley no sense -- just try to paraphrase it: Indiana man tells officers why he is accused of stabbing his brother.
