I don't know if this is a SWAG, speculation based on informed sources or a leak by the Romney camp, but it's interesting:

Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney appears to be in the final stages of deciding who to pick as his vice presidential running mate, with speculation growing that he has narrowed his choice down to a short-list of three.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman, former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal all offer various strengths to Romney should he decide to pick one of them to join his battle to unseat President Barack Obama and his vice president, Joe Biden, in the November 6 election.

If you care to, go over and take  our News-Sentintel poll on the subject. The voting is very early, but so far Condi Rice and "somebody else" are running neck and neck. At the Drudge Report, his poll has Marco Rubio ahead. I think there's still a strong element in the GOP that yearns for the bold choice. Somewhere in the story, it says that Romney has a "desire for a safe choice who could take over as president if necessary." That's not the first time I've seen it put that way, but it's a strange pairing isn't it? Picking someone who could be president is the "safe" choice. Awww, come on, go out on a limb and choose someone with absolutely no ability to be president.

I know what you're thinking -- Republicans already did that for the No. 2 spot four years ago. Of course, Democrats did it for the top spot.
