From Ron Paul's farewell speech (full transcript here):
During part one of his farewell speech to Congress, Rep. Ron Paul insisted that the internet remain free, as it is an important alternative to the “government media complex.”
“The internet will provide the alternative to the government media complex that controls the news and most political propaganda,” Paul stated. “This is why it’s essential that the Internet remains free of government regulation.”
Amen, sir, amen. The political class has always regretted the First Amendment -- after all, it created that damn, pesky Fourth Estate watchdog (though, heaven knows, the dog has mostly been asleep lately). When radio and TV came along, they by God were not gonna make that mistake again. Everybody in this business should be fighting with the last ounce of strength to keep the flow of information oo the Internet -- and smartphones and whatever else comes along -- as free from regulation as possible for as long as possible. Those in power never want checked on, which is why they must be.
