This isn't tracking

Anybody else find this kind of nonsense distasteful?

According to NORAD, Santa Claus was last spotted over the Philippines on his travels delivering toys around the world. This location was reported at about 9:15 CST.

Al.com will update his position every two hours starting at 11 a.m.

NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, has been tracking Santa’s whereabouts for 50 years. It uses radar, satellites, Santa Cams and fighter jets, according to the website.

I mean, it's one thing for adults not to blow it for the kids. I had an editor here who insisted there never, ever be a hint in our newspaper that Santa was anything but real (he made me run that treacly "Yes, Virginaia . . ." every year, too, but that's another matter). But this kind of outright deception has what point, exactly? Is it just a cute little joke we're sharing? Or are we supposed to read it to our kids to give credibility to the Santa story? Sorry, just don't get it.
