Saturdays off

Oh, drat? You mean there will be two whole days in every week when I won't have the house blizzarded with bills and junk mail?

The U.S. Postal Service will stop delivering mail on Saturdays but continue to deliver packages six days a week under a plan aimed at saving about $2 billion annually, the financially struggling agency says.

In an announcement scheduled for later Wednesday, the service is expected to say the Saturday mail cutback would begin in August.

The move accentuates one of the agency's strong points — package delivery has increased by 14 percent since 2010, officials say, while the delivery of letters and other mail has declined with the increasing use of email and other Internet services.

Bills and junk are all most of us get these days, so even cutting down to three days a week wouldn't be any big deal. When's the last time you worte or received an honest-to-goodness letter? I don't think most people would mind losing package delivery on Saturday, either.

The story notes that the Postal Service has been trying to go to a five-day delivery system for some years but could never get Congress to go along and that it "was not immediately clear how the service could eliminate Saturday mail without congressional approval." Hey, just do it and dare them to stop it. Works for the president. Silly old Congress. Dumb Constitution.
