Watch it, kid, you'll put somebody's eye out!

VALPARAISO, Ind. (STMW) – A fourth-grade boy at Cooks Corners Elementary in Valparaiso who brought a plastic BB gun to school Tuesday has been suspended.

In a telephone message to parents, Principal Erin Utesch said the student showed the gun to other students, but did not threaten or use the pistol. She said the investigation was continuing with the student’s parents.

At least it was an actual gun of some kind and not a drawing of a gun or a pastry shaped like a gun or a gesture pretending to be a gun. Kinda dumb, actually. Even during my childhood in the prehistoric era, I don't anybody would have even considered taking a BB gun to school.

Oh, and today's I-can't-believe-I-really-did-that confession of childhood foolhardiness: We actually did have gunfights with our BB guns. Nobody lost an eye, but I can vouch for the fact that getting a BB in the leg stings like hell. And, best trick ever: If you shove a strike-anywhere match into the barrel of a BB gun head first, it will come out of the gun on fire when you shoot it. Awesome.
