Scary -- President Obama in a commencement speech:
Still, you’ll hear voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s the root of all our problems, even as they do their best to gum up the works; or that tyranny always lurks just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave, creative, unique experiment in self-rule is just a sham with which we can’t be trusted.
Another example of the False Dilemma the president is so good at.
The voices I hear incessantly warn not about government in general but about an all-powerful, too intrusive, compulsively proflitate government -- you know, something along the lines of "power corrupts" and "absolutel power corrupts absolutely." Worrying about the possibility of such tyranny and complaining about a government that's so big it's a real possibility is not the same as calling our "brave experiment in self-rule is just a sham."
