Temporarily permanent

This is kind of scary:

Behind Wal-Mart, the second-largest employer in America is Kelly Services, a temporary work provider.

Friday's disappointing jobs report showed that part-time jobs are at an all-time high, with 28 million Americans now working part-time. The report also showed another disturbing fact: There are now a record number of Americans with temporary jobs.

Approximately 2.7 million, in fact. And the trend has been growing.

Most of the commentaries I've seen on this focus on how weak the "economic recovery" has been or use it as an excuse to bash the Obama administration (I don't need an excuse, thank you very much). But I think it's an indication of something we can't recover from, only adapt to -- the transformation of the work environment and resulting changes in the workforce. Loyalty between company and longtime employee is a thing of the past. Businesses are looking for more productivity, less overhead, more flexibility and maneuverability. Employees are -- well, having to adapt.
