Now that it's almost time to say "Vaya con Dios" to Fidel Castro, will Hugo Chavez become the darling of some of this country's leftist "elected dictator" worshipers? With remarks like this, it's almost a sure bet:
His right hand raised, Chavez declared: "Fatherland, socialism or death — I swear it," invoking the Cuban leader's famous call to arms.
Chavez also alluded to Jesus, saying: "I swear by Christ — the greatest socialist in history."
It would be too easy to make fun of such sentiments. "I must have missed the passages in the Bible that talked about the state controlling everything and deciding who gets what help." But the truth is that Chavez' attitude, confusing religion and politics and using the resulting incoherence to sustain a movement of morons, has a long and cherished history in this country.
And just think about it logically. Jesus advocated personal responsibility, both in charity and the path to salvation. He was the first libertarian.
