Bad boy

The man has 14 gold medals -- more than any other Olympian in history -- and he feels compelled to apologize to the U.S. Olympic Committee gnats who are "disappointed" in such behavior from a "role model"?

Michael Phelpts apologized for "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo of him smoking a marijuana pipe surfaced in British tabloid News of the World.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said in a statement. "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

After he won six gold medals in 2004, he was busted for a DUI, and apologized. Now, he wins eight and lets off a little steam at a party and apologizes for that. Can't wait to see what he apologizes for if he wins nine or 10. (All they have to do is add an event or two.) I liked Phelps less when he seemed to be just a swimming drone so fixated on that one thing that he would not be a very interesting person to know. I liked him more when he seemed to be a more normal person with a weakness or two. Now I like him less again.

If anybody ever told me I was a role model for anybody, I think I'd just stay in my house. Well, I can think of one way I could be helpful.
