Out of the race

Sometimes it seems every educator in Indiana is salivating over the possibility of getting some of the $250 million Indiana might get from President Obama's "Race to the Top" program. But they're showing a modicum of common sense in Northwest Allen County Schools, where the board signed a "memorandum of understanding" saying the district is only possibly interested in receiving some of the funds. Interim Superintendent Ken Fowble wants to know more about what participation would require and is, in any case, skeptical of "free" money:

I'm not sure any money is free,” Fowble said.

Board members were not unanimous in their quest to receive the money. One member voted against signing the memorandum of understanding, because he said it was wasteful spending at the federal level.

“We're spending money we don't have, and we're doing that enough already,” Howard “Nick” Schortgen said. “It's money for our grandkids.”

No more spending money that isn't really there? What a concept!
