Tailing the Komets

We're going to OVERTIME

Missouri has to be wondering what it takes to kill the Komets off. Jamie Milam scored his first goal of the playoffs with 22.6 seconds left to force the overtime. It was also the Komets' first power-play goal of the series.

Holy cow!

After falling behind 1-0, again, the Komets scored three goals in about five minutes and they did it by going offensive. With Missouri's defensemen pinching in to try to create offense, the Komets took off the other way for a pair of odd-man rushes. First, JM Rizk scored, then the Komets got a 3-on-1 with Brett Smith settting up Leo Thomas and then Mike Vaskivuo set up Chris Auger on a 2-on-1.

The Komets are beating up the Mavericks down low, just pounding on their defensemen and they are coughing the puck up.

Here's Rizk's goal

Going to be a long night

Both teams are playing very carefully and with good reason. The ice is really rough and the puck is rolling all over the place. There's no way anybody is going to score a pretty goal in this game. It's just not going to work out.

Komets out-shot the Mavs 15-9 in the first period. Both teams are dumping and chasing because I'm guessing they are wary of a turnover at center ice for a transition opportunity. Both teams are trying to be patient, and there's a much slower pace to the game than in Game 3.

What to expect

I expect this to be the toughest game of the series so far. Each game has picked up the intensity on both sides, and the Komets won that battle last night, barely, but they won it. I figure the Mavericks will come super hard the first 10 minutes and see if they can build a 2-0 lead.

It will be interesting to see if the Komets can get off to a fast start for once and take the early lead. Missouri has had that advantage throughout the playoffs so far.

Planning to come over for Game 5?

Which will be held Saturday. If so, you should be aware that the NASCAR crew is in town for a Sunday race, and there are probably no hotel rooms available anywhere close. Just saying you should plan ahead. Anything around here is also going to be expensive. The Mavericks are offering a package of four tickets for prices starting at $70.

BTW, one reason there are fewer and often no discounted tickets during the playoffs is because a percentage of the gate goes to the players' bonuses.

WANE's highlights

So, who's staying up late tonight?

You've got a great game to watch so far. Both teams are giving it everything they have and are playing as hard as they can.

The Komets' strategy is...

You can already tell

The way the puck is  bouncing around that it's going to be a fluke goal or something odd that decides this game. The puck won't sit down at all anywhere on the ice so both teams are just chipping it out and in and then trying to force a mistake on a rebound or a bad pass or something. The way the goalies are playing, two goals might win this.

Komets have evened up the shots 19-19, but Chaulk is now in the penalty box.

Komets are starting to work a lot harder in the Missouri end.

Nick has saved them so far

Shots are 14-7 Missouri and the Mavericks are beating the Komets down the ice and to the front of the net. Nick is holding onto every save he can to slow the game down.

Missouri's goal came after Nick stopped a Sebastien Thinel breakaway but both defenseman went with Thinel and nobody cleared the puck so Ed McGrane could shoot into an open net.

It's 1-1 early

Ed McGrane scored on a breakaway for Missouri, and J.M. Rizk scored a rebound goal for the Komets. Nick made three very good saves on the first Missouri PP or it probably should be 2-1 Mavs. Shots are 8-2 Missouri with 11:48 left in the first.

Nick is starting in goal tonight.
