Education is a bargain

Fort Wayne Community Schools teachers get a "morale booster" from the school board:

The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board unanimously passed a resolution Monday night in support of keeping collective bargaining for teachers the way it currently is.

Several teachers in the audience stood up and applauded after the vote.

Auer house

Thank goodness they don't have a funny name provoking adolescent snickers, huh?

The former FourthWave building downtown has been renamed the Auer Center for Arts and Culture.

Officials from Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne planned to announce the name change at a news conference at 10 a.m. today at the building, 300 E. Main St.

Arts United announced in late November it had purchased the building for $2.2 million and planned to convert it into a home for local arts and cultural organizations.

'bye, Tim

My city councilman is quiting:

Tim Pape, a Democrat who has represented City Council's 5th District since January 2000, will not seek re-election this year.

In a statement released today, Pape alluded to the “great personal involvement” public service demands

Pay grade

Yeah, well, sure:

Mayoral candidate Paula Hughes continued her criticism of city budgeting by saying she'd cut the pay of the job she hopes to win in November.

Hughes, one of the Republicans competing for the chance to run for mayor this year, said the mayor of Fort Wayne shouldn't be paid more than the governor of Indiana. Democratic Mayor Tom Henry's salary is $124,665; Gov. Mitch Daniels earns $95,000.

Foul Ba

The city's difficulties with a certain mayor's name have gone national. Here's the Associated Press version of the story on the MSNBC site:

A former Indiana mayor who won four terms in the 1930s and 1950s is proving less popular with modern-day city leaders, who say they probably won't name a new government center for him because of the jokes his moniker could inspire.

Spring fever

OK, that's it. I've had enough of winter, so I hereby declare that spring begins tomorrow. I'm a blogger, after all. I can do anything.

Well, maybe I should call on Phil for an assist:

Misfire

Guns can be picked up and used for good or evil, but they are morally neutral objects. Gun-control advocates always try to obscure this point as they strain mightily, without success, to connect the dots between bad gun acts and lawful gun ownership. So in commenting on efforts by some state legislators to ease a number of gun restrictions, The Journal Gazette just has to tie it to a recent murder:

Bait and switch

This one's for the "With friends like this, you don't need enemies" file, perhaps with the subcategory, "If you allow yourself to be lectured on conservatism by The Journal Gazette editorial page, you deserve what happens." Tea party activists are seeking to challenge Sen. Richard Lugar in the primary next year on the grounds that he is not sufficiently conservative. Now the senator is being defended vigrously by The Journal Gazette. Case closed!

Name game

I suppose Pointless, Extravagant Pile of Crap is out of the question:

We are one community, and our commitment to building a more attractive and competitive Fort Wayne and Allen County was strengthened with the decision to bring nearly all City and County government together in two downtown buildings.

[. . .]

What should the community call the new government building at 200 E Berry?

The $100 million question

Another blue ribbon panel of movers and shakers is convened to tell us what we should do:
