The deal of the art

Yikes -- not a bad estate for a couple of southern Indiana hicks:

LONDON - A water lily painting by impressionist master Claude Monet owned by the estate of an Indiana couple has sold for more than $80 million at auction, kicking off a week of modern-art sales expected to reach records that defy the global economic downturn.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

The Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at IPFW did a poll asking Hoosiers how much they respected 10 well-known figures, mostly politicians. Please, don't be too shocked, but the politicians didn't come out on top:

The most respected out of the list of 10 figures was Mother Teresa - the late Nobel Peace Prize winner for her humanitarian work - with Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy following closely.

The predator dilemma

I think District Court Judge David Hamilton made the right call that Indiana's law allowing warrantless monitoring of former sex offenders' Internet activity was unconstitutionally broad. The law would have applied to those who had already served the sentences handed down to themand who, therefore, presumably have the same rights as everybody else.

Slow down or move over

Good:

Indianapolis -- On June 25th, personnel assigned to the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division working with troopers assigned to the Indianapolis district will be focusing their efforts on enforcing the Indiana Move Over Law for commercial motor vehicles.

Marking the miles

(Today's quiz: What's the distance from the Fort Wayne Airport Expressway exit of 1-69 to the I-465 exit in Indianapolis?)

A crumby deal for the region

I've written some controversial editorials in my time and gotten roundly denounced by people in authority for causing some kind of damage or other to some cherished belief or community institution. But I don't think I ever got accused of doing the most damage in 50 years:

Negligent and stupid

In addition to the "educational neglect" charge, there should be felony stupidity charge available for people like this:

Letting your child miss school is enough to land you a felony charge in Indiana - and up to three years in prison - as one Wabash woman has discovered.

Have gun, will -- oops

With all the information out there about cheap, easily obtainable, impossible-to-trace "Saturday Night Specials," what does this teller-shooting dummy use?

In the police report, shell casings from the scene matched the characteristics of a rare 9 millimeter Calico handgun. A witness later reported that the suspect had carried a similar type of weapon.

Pretty ambitious

Katie Stam, 21, a communications major at the Univeristy of Indianapolis, has just been named Miss Indiana, putting her on the road to her lifelong dream:

I have wanted to be Miss America since I was a little girl . . . for as long as I can remember," said Stam, who is a news-reporting intern at WISH (Channel 8).

Undue influence

A Hoosier columnist thinks the presidential candidates should steer clear of religious endorsements:

While Barack Obama and John McCain are working out the ground rules for the next four months, it would be so great if they would agree to a moratorium on religious pandering.

Before they decide about town hall meetings, running mates, which convicted felon pals to defend or jettison — both men should sign a joint promise to lay off of seeking and trumpeting religion-related endorsements.
