Tailing the Komets

Today's story

There's been a debate going all spring about the validity of changing the United Hockey League name to the International Hockey League. The owners may have disbanded the UHL and started fresh with the IHL, though the fans see a different name but the same teams, coaches and players.

Some fun stuff coming tomorrow

It might provide some more answers for you. It was certainly a lot of fun to write today. It's not breaking news or anything like that, but I still think you'll find it interesting.

Draft results

The International Hockey League (IHL) conducted a dispersal draft on Wednesday to disperse players from the 2006-07 final rosters of the Chicago Hounds, Elmira Jackals, Quad City Mallards and Rockford IceHogs.  Those four Member Clubs will not participate in the 2007-08 IHL season.

Just talked to Guy

Here are some of the things he had to say:

Guy Dupuis played the six-team West Coast Hockey League in 2002-03 and says he sees no reason why it can't work now.

Talked to the Frankes

Some highlights:

* No truth to the rumor they were involved in or interested in purchasing either Port Huron or Bloomington. ``I think a lot of the discussion came on that because we were involved in all the negotiations in those deals,'' Michael Franke said. ``With Richard leaving, I was the person in the middle of all that representing the league. Somebody had to be there.''

* There will be a new record book and the league is studying  if all the old IHL trophies are available, and if they are, do they want to use them or go in a different  direction.

Goodwin retires

Komets forward Jonathan Goodwin has decided it's time to start the rest of his life. Goodwin, 25, has  announced his retirement from professional hockey.

"There comes a point and time when I realized I couldn't go any further and I wasn't going to get called up any more,'' Goodwin said from Waltham, Mass. "I didn't want to be a 30-year old guy trying to start out and enter the work force again. That five years makes a big difference.''

Announcement coming

This is from an email to Dave Schmidt of The Senior Report

In an on-air interview during the second intermission of Game 7 of the Colonial Cup Finals with Kalamazoo broadcaster Mike Modugno, UHL President/CEO Richard Brosal mentioned that an announcement by the league should be forthcoming next week or maybe in 7-10 days. He also said that fans would be very excited to hear the news.

Fantastic game tonight

It's 0-0 after two periods, but man, has there been plenty of action. Both goaltenders have been amazing.

Rockford's Jesse Bennefield received a slashing major and a game misconduct, and the Komets' Mario Larocque recieved an instigation penalty for retaliating. UHL President Richard Brosal is in attendance tonight and the league is going to review whether the instigation penalty was the proper call since Larocque could argue that he was simply defending himself from the slash. I'll let you know what I hear.

The French judge gives it a 9.3

Doesn't it seem like there's been even more diving penalties this year? I would have thought with Galbraith gone we would have seen less this year. The crazy thing is I think the refs could have called even more in the games I've seen. I like the fact that they are calling them, I just can't figure out why it's taking the players so long to adjust. It's an obvious point of emphasis so far this season. My only beef is I wish they'd call it more as an individual penalty and not go for the twofer so much. Maybe that would discourage and embarrass the players even more so they'd stop it.

What coach had to say

We were bad. It's right between the ears. Did we look like our team tonight?

We had a great week of practice working on our systems and then come gametime you barely see them.

Lineup changes

Pascal Morency is in and Bogdan Rudenko is on the seven-day IR. No word yet on what the lines will be, though Kevin Hanson is now paired with Jani Honkanen, leaving Guy with Mario and Domber with Arthur.

Everybody was loose as a goose this morning and before the game.

Referee is one who I think is one of the better ones usually, Shaun Davis.

At practice today

Some updates:

Pasacal Morency says he should be able to go this weekend coming back from a separated shoulder.

A.J. Bozoian is still day-to-day with a hip pointer/abdominal strain, but he thinks he'll be ready to go.

Everybody was in a good mood and seemed ready to go for the weekend.

Stat of the week

Because I'm bored and  need more to do, I'm going to try to come up with this new feature every week. I'll take any suggestions for this as well.

Sad day for Komet, hockey fans

According to the Kalamazoo Gazette, Wings Owner Ray T. “Ted” Parfet passed away Monday morning at age 84.

Mr. Parfet was one of the classiest people I've ever met in hockey, which is why I honor him with the ``Mr.'' He was an icon of minor league hockey and an excellent friend to the Komets during their days in both the IHL and the UHL. There were often times when the Frankes and the Parfets seemed to be the only voice of reason in the IHL, and they almost always worked together. Mr. Parfet always treated his fellow owners as partners and not competitors.

Notes from the Komets

The Komets started the week with their 45th consecutive home Thanksgiving day game, stopping Bloomington 5-2. It  was Fort Wayne's 4th straight Thanksgiving holiday win and improved the Komet's Thanksgiving home record to 28-14-3 overall since starting the turkey day home game tradition in 1962. The Komets are 6-2-0 on Thanksgiving since joining the  UHL in 1999.

Saturday the Komets wrestled a 4-3 shootout win out of Rockford. The Komets are unbeaten in 3 shootouts so far this season. The win snapped the Komet's 2-game road winless streak.
