The Mississippi RiverKings announced today that the hockey team will operate as a member of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) during the 2011-2012 season, which begins in October.
“Our goal has always been to build a winning hockey team in a manner that produces positive impacts in our community over and above the entertainment value to area hockey fans,” said Lanier Hurdle, a board member. “This change will let us build relationships with teams closer to northwest Mississippi, and build interest in hockey in the region.”
OK, so they take blindside out, isn't that just banning any hits to the head? Huh?
The Putt for Mutts annual golf outing to support Hope for Animals will be held July 17 at Orchard Ridge Country Club. The cost is $100 per person or $400 per foursome. There's also a golf with a celebrity option for $400. Carts, greens fees, carts, use of range, light lunch and dinner are included. There's also a day pass for use of the tennis courts, swimming and workout facilities for $25 for the first pass and $15 for additional passes that includes dinner.
* Bobby Phillips is having shoulder surgery tomorrow to repair a torn labrum. He's also been accepted to IPFW's nursing school. No one seems to know what will mean yet for his chances to play. He believes he might be able to do it, Komets aren't so sure.
* The only players the Komets have not protected on their list are Guy Dupuis, Brandon Warner, Derek Patrosso and Michael Ratchuk and Matt Krug (AHL contracts). Patrosso has taken a job selling pharmaceuticals. The list gets pared to eight by July 18, but players you have already signed do not count against the eight.
Two things strike me about this. It shows how badly these buildings need tenants, especially publicly owned buildings, and $500,000 for 50 percent of an ECHL team? Are you kidding me?
