Keepin' us down, man

That casino Mayor Tom Henry wanted to snag for Fort Wayne? Ain't gonna happen:

A bill that would have allowed one of two Gary riverboat casino licenses to be transferred to northeastern Indiana fizzled in a Senate committee Thursday and is likely dead this session.

Butting in

A new member of the City Council wants to revisit a controversial ordinance:

City Councilman Marty Bender, R-at-large, said Tuesday night he will ask council to reconsider the smoking ban, and is drafting a proposal. Benderwas vague on specifics other than to say “they'll be some minor changes.”

“It'll be a surprise,” he said. He did not say when he might introduce his proposal.

Atmospherics

Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries wants to give some of his officers extra arrest powers. Working within a program already in place by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcemnt (ICE),  those officers would have the power to arrest people for immigration violations if they are also charged with serious felonies or driving while intoxicated. The arrest powers could be used only in those officers' normal course of duty, according to ICE regulations.

Community standards

Most of the controversy about public libraries and obscenity these days has been about whether or not Internet "porn filters" should be installed. But now comes a protest so low-tech it seems quaint:

Fort Wayne man is on a mission to ban what he calls pornography at the Allen County Public Library.

Opposing forces

The Code Blue folks succeeded in stopping the $500 million FWCS renovation project, and now they've set their sights even higher:

Their new mission, they say, is nothing less than to control - and thereby reform - an unaccountable, underperforming bureaucracy that is out of touch with the public it supposedly serves.

Two logos

In with the new

fwcs-new.jpgFort Wayne Community Schools has unveiled its new logo. Created by the Asher Agency, it is "not intended to be a literal depiction of anything specific, but instead symbolizes FWCS' position as a strong, progressive school system.

Strike two

When Gov. Daniels announced his proposal to cap residential property taxes, he also talked a lot about restraining local spending. The idea was that, to start getting a handle on taxes, communities would get less money and learn to do with less. But Mayor Henry has a different idea:

On the way

Libertarians didn't win any seats in the city election, but it can't be said that they didn't make a difference:

Don Schmidt, who represented the 2nd District for 36 years, lost to Democrat Karen Goldner by 12 votes in a race in which Libertarian Jonathan Bartels drew 580 votes. And At-Large Councilman John Crawford fell about 100 votes short of re-election in a race that saw the three at-large Libertarians draw a combined 11,600 votes.

Nincompoopery on parade

If you're going to hold a "public hearing," for God's sake let the members of the public speak first:

About four hours into a meeting Wednesday, Allen County resident Charles Powell and his wife, Marvel, were frustrated.
