Then Nick Wheeler scored on a blast.
Ron Leef, Dan Price, Kelly Hurd and Kelly Perrault attack Doug Teskey during the third period Sunday.
Teskey was the best player in the game.
Toledo won 8-7, needing a shootout. Taylor Raszka scored a hat trick for Toledo and Adam Lewis scored two for the Komet. Other scorers for Fort Wayne were Scott Collins (local amateur player), John Hilworth, Kelly Perrault, Martin Burgers and Dale Baldwin. Kelly Hurd scored in the shootout on Doug Teskey, who played goal for both teams.
Then here, in the third period, he's taking out Adam Lewis to make a save.
I asked coach Al Sims why they've been playing one man short lately.
``We can't get guys in. We've called for players. It has to be an American player, and not many teams have American players still on their roster. We have five vets, so Henley had to sit. It's been a lot of reasons.''
Why an American player?
JM Rizk just missed on this backhand at the end of the first period. It's 1-1.
Here are the lineups for tomorrow's Legends game in Toledo. Looks like Doug Teskey is going to play goal for both teams. No, I don't know the status of Larkin Saalfrank for this game since he's not the Komets' emergency back-up.
Toledo
1 Ted Tucker (G), 2 Andy Suhy, 5 Rick Piche, 6 Dan Watson, 6 Don Waddell, 9 Jim McCabe, 16 Andre Vanopdenbosch, 16 Bruce MacDonald, 18 NickParillo, 18 Bill Joyce, 20 Jon Kretin, 23 Derek Booth, 25 Mike Whitton, 25 Gordy Hunt, 27 Taylor Raszka, 27 Dave Falkenberg, 30 Doug Teskey (G), 36 Nick Vitucci (G)
* Scott Kishel is on 21-day IR.
* Marco Cousineau has been placed on reserve with an injury. Larkin Saalfrank will be the emergency goaltender.
Komets captain Colin Chaulk is returning to the lineup tonight. He got the OK from the doctor this morning to return and is planning to skate a regular shift. That takes care of the open spot the Komets have been holding.
* Cincinnati now leads the Komets by 12 points with 20 games to go.
* The Komets have fallen to ninth and out of a playoff spot.
* The Komets have scored 20 goals over their last eight games, and 13 of those have come in two games. They've score seven goals in the other six games.
* The Komets have allowed 31 power-play goals in their last 28 games, but are now six of 79 on their own power play.
* Once again Thomas Beauregard is the only player to score in a one-goal game. Odd.
* Kalamazoo is one point behind the Komets in the standings.
Cincinnati goaltender Brian Foster scored a goal tonight.
No Komet goalie has ever done it, and that's something I'd love to cover before it's all over. Rockford's Michel Robinson did it against the Komets on Dec. 29, 2004.
Hey, at least this is better than talking about tonight's game.
The league notified me today that the limit will still be four veterans next year, not four and a player/assistant coach as reported in today's story. One of the four can be a player/assistant coach.
No decision yet on NHL players in Olympics
I think they owe this to us as hockey fans. After all the crap with the lockout, it would be inexcusable for them not to play in the Olympics. And I want another World Cup ASAP, too! We haven't had once since 2004!
They didn't even start this season because of their little crap (I'd like to use stronger, but gave that up for lent) negotiations, they can darn well stop a season long enough for the players to participate in the Olympics.
Scott Kishel, John Dunbar and Mike Hoban are all out for this weekend, but Charlie Effinger is back and Larkin Saalfrank has been released from his emergency goaltending gid.
Komets General Manager David Franke also said he expects Colin Chaulk to return to the lineup next weekend.
``He's put a lot of good days back-to-back, and I think he's going to play next weekend,'' Franke said. ``That's what we're looking at right now.''
Chaulk agrees.
