At first I thought airlines charging a baggage fee signaled the coming end of civilization. But this may be a better sign:
It’s one of the luxuries of staying in a hotel — room service. But the days of delivery could be numbered for all of us.

reported Monday, a big hotel in New York City is leading the pack in cutting the service.
Hollywood shows the joy of lounging in luxury in numerous films, but the days of room service are numbered. The city’s largest hotel, the New York Hilton Midtown, is getting rid of it.
“You want to feel like you’re taken care of,” hotel guest Rhea Newman said.

are staying at the Hilton Midtown in a few weeks, but they’ll be out of luck getting food delivered to their room.
Room service is perhaps the greatest self-indulgence there is. If you can't get that, why even bother to stay in a hotel? I remember a conference I attended in Miami, during which I spent mornings sipping orange juice and munching toast and bacon while reading the newspaper on the balcony overlooking the beach. There may have been a time when I felt more deliciously decadent, but I can't remember it.
