INDIANAPOLIS — State officials expect more backyard fireworks shows this year because budget problems have forced many municipalities to cancel large professional fireworks displays. The Indiana State Fire Marshal's office says it's issued nearly 200 fewer fireworks permits this year compared to last year.
Freedom -- it's a wonderful thing, except for the guy who wants to get a little sleep while also coping with two freaked-out cats who jump with every fireworks boom. If you insist on privatizing your fireworks experience this year, at least follow some basic safety tips. Some of the most recommended ones are: Don't allow young kids to play with fireworks and supervise the older kids closely. Always wear eye protection. Keep a bucket of water nearby. Stay far away from Oakdale Drive in Fort Wayne.
Well, OK, I made that last up one. Still.
Oh, say, did you know that nearly 5,000 fireworks-related injuries were treated in hospital emergency rooms between June 2005 and July 2008? And that a Purdue expert says fireworks can cause permanent damage to kids' hearing?
Enjoy.

Leo:
I wouldn't JUST blame it on "budgets" for the lack of professional fireworks...
Let's place blame on SOCIETY in general, for the lack of civility and respect for our fellow man, shall we?
Shoot them off AT SOME PARK, and not in our intersections or on our porches, m'kay?
SAFETY TIPS?
ROFLMAO!
You're joshing, right?
These people are about as bright as a low-watt appliance bulb as it is...yet they drive cars, procreate, and shoot off fireworks without regard to others...
Oh, and they also gripe about NOT being able to buy booze on SUNDAY (when they could just get it SATURDAY)...yeah, THOSE people.
As for the kids' hearing damage...the incessant BOOMCARS these alpha male morons drive about DAILY take care of that nicely, thank you.
Would it be okay to drive down Oakdale Drive playing some patriotic SOUSA music?
(just askin')
Freedom IS a wonderful thing...it's the "freedom to be stuck on stupid" I have trouble with when it comes to moronic and unsafe behavior with fireworks.
Have a safe 4th...in keeping with the situation AND the cats!
( been there, done that...for the last 13 years with MINE).

My father manned a .50-calliber machine gun during World War II. He was practically deaf by the time he was my age. So I trust you'll join me in denouncing not just firecrackers, but war.
