I honestly didn't think I'd see this in my lifetime:
For marijuana advocates, the last 12 months have been a period of unprecedented success as Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize recreational use of marijuana. And now for the first time, a clear majority of Americans (58%) say the drug should be legalized. This is in sharp contrast to the time Gallup first asked the question in 1969, when only 12% favored legalization.
The turnaround of public opinion on gay marriage might be No. 1 on the list of astounding stunners, but this has to be in the top five somewhere. If one or two more states approve marijuana (especially if it's for recreational as well as medical use), we may reach a tipping point from which there's no turning back. Oh, well. The revenue flowing to state coffers will take some of the pressure off the smokers and drinkers who now pay most of the sin taxes.
