This is a little out of tune with current wisdom:
As families gather around the table this holiday season, Gallup finds that family dining is a part of everyday life for the majority of U.S. parents, and that it hasn't diminished much in recent years. Fifty-three percent of adults with children younger than 18 say their family eats dinner together at home six or seven nights a week. The average 5.1 dinners that families share each week is down slightly from 5.4 in 1997, but unchanged from 2001.
The commentariat would have us believe that nobody sits down with family for a meal these days. If this poll is to be trusted, that's simply not the case. Or maybe this is the kind of thing people fib a little bit about -- we don't even like strangers to think poorly of us. You know, like, "Yeah, I have PBS on right now" said to the pollster on the phone with the sounds of that "LaW and Order" marathon in the background.
