Politics and other nightmares

A healthy disagreement

I've been complaing for years about the control over us exercised by "nine unelected people who serve for life," even when there has been a conservative majority on the Supreme Court. (See here, for example.) It's nice to now have some high-profile company:

Eviction notice

Since I'm obviously more sympathetic to the Tea Party movement than the Occupy movement, some will accuse me of partisan-hackerly-level gloating for bringing this up:

Fashion statements

Hoosier fashion on parade! In Anderson, they're talking about relaxing somewhat the dress code instituted in the school system almost five years ago:

Shhhhhh!

A rock band called Awaken the Dead makes so much noise the neighbors complain? What a shock:

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) - Members of a rock band are keeping up a fight to practice at their home despite a central Indiana city's 24-hour-a-day noise ordinance.

A nickel for your thoughts

Some real change in Canada:

Canada will withdraw the penny from circulation this year, saving taxpayers about C$11 million ($11 million) annually and forcing retailers to round prices to the nearest nickel, the government announced in its budget today.

OK, you win; what next?

Yep:

If the Supreme Court chucks ObamaCare entirely, which looks increasingly likely, Republicans will finally have a chance to redefine the debate. But only if they get educated and put together reform ideas now.

Courting trouble

The Muncie Star Press, stuck in a "the court must look like us" group identity rut:

Quick. Can you name any justices on the Indiana Supreme Court?

If you can't, don't feel bad. Just do a Google search and you'll get the answer. And you'll notice one other thing: There are no females sitting on the five-member high court.

Gas pains

Hey, Indiana is in the vanguard!

The price of an average gallon of regular gas surpassed the $3.90 mark Wednesday, moving to within a dime of the $4 threshold.

The average price rose 1.3 cents to $3.911 in the latest daily survey conducted for the motorist group AAA. The price has risen for 19 consecutive days.

Health care politics

I've seen this argument made in several places:

If the Supreme Court decides to strike down the new health care law’s individual mandate to purchase insurance, it will represent a remarkable election-year rebuke for President Obama – the rejection, by the nation’s highest court, of a central provision of his main domestic policy accomplishment.

It might also help him win re-election.

Safe at last

Well, that was fun, let's not do it again:

Local government reform will not be a front-burner issue in the 2012 governor's race. Indiana has 3,086 local governments and 10,000 officeholders -- a potent political force in opposition to government restructuring.
