Komets win 4-2

Colin Chaulk is playing so well right now, everyone needs heating pads to shake his hot hand.

The veteran Komets center scored two goals to extend his point scoring streak to seven games as Fort Wayne beat Muskegon 4-2 before 8,222 Memorial Coliseum fans. Chaulk has torched the Lumberjacks for four goals and eight points in four games this season. Though everyone kids him about his preference to pass and his reluctance to shoot, Chaulk has scored eight goals in his last nine games after scoring only one in the Komets' first 19 games.

Rest in peace, Mike Nichols

Long-time Komets fan Mike Nichols passed away today after a long, long battle with cancer. I don't know if I ever met anybody who fought harder.

Mike was the fan who inspired Guy Dupuis two years ago when the Komets trailed Port Huron 3-1 in that series. Guy invited Mike into the locker room after the game to drink from the Turner Cup.

He was a special man.

Friday night's game

Some post-game notes

David Hukalo has a concussion along with his stitches and will miss the rest of the weekend... so will goaltender Nick Boucher. Parris Duffus, who was at tonight's game with his son, will be the emergency back-up the rest of the weekend... Bobby Phillips scored his first pro goal and his first goal in more than two years to tie the score in the third period... The MacMillan-Sawyer fight was because of Sawyer's hit on Rick Varone, MacMillan said... I thought Sean O'Connor played a very good game essentially on one leg after getting hit by the Fort Wayne bench early in the second period...

Strange first period

Komets trail 1-0 after Konstantin Shafranov and Sean O'Connor both hit the post.

Early in the period, Nick Boucher got hit up high and a buckle on his mask came lose. Nick flipped his mask off, expecting an automatic whistle, which Referee Ryan Carroll did not give him. It's in the rulebook that as soon as the goaltender loses his mask, it's an automatic stoppage in play. Then Boucher knocked his own goal off the moorings. It probably should have been a delay of game but they talked about it for three or four minutes and called nothing.
