This does not compute:

The budget remains flat from last year, but the portion of it supported through property taxes will increase from $132.5 million to $134.9 million because the city will request the maximum levy at 2.9 percent, said Roller.

[. . .]

The city has an estimated cash reserve balance of $25 million, twice the 7 percent to 10 percent of the tax-supported revenue amount that is required.

Concession to the times

This has potential. The restaurant at Fort Wayne International Airport is going to get a makeover:

Begging to differ

I wonder if City Councilwoman Liz Brown wishes she had kept her mouth shut. In July, she proposed changes to existing anti-begging laws that would exempt charitable organizations and "buskers" such as street musicians who perform in exchange for volunary donations. Now, a fellow council member has upped the stakes:

Constitutionally speaking, City Councilman Tim Pape figures, there's not much difference between begging and busking.

Small change

Having growing up poor, my parents were always on the lookout for bargains after they moved to the Big City of Fort Wayne. I was the contrarian of the family. Whenever they said they needed to go right and and buy something because it was, say, marked down from $100 to $80, so they could "save $20!" I told they should just stay home and save $80. I still see things that way, as in:

Are you ready?

Just a reminder that Oct. 4 -- that's just a week from Monday -- is when registration closes for the Nov. 2 election. And even if you've voted recently enough to still have your registration, you still need to re-register if you've changed addresses. Voting tends to be down in off-year elections, so your vote will be even more important. Here's a list from the registration office

Who pays?

If two counties are reported having trouble with medical bills for prisoners, there are likely others we haven't heard from yet, so consider this a possible trend. Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries is requesting $229,000 extra because, among other expenses, six inmates with serious problems have received more than $99,000 in care since March. St.

A historic first

So Fort Wayne may soon have an 1,883-acre "park and boulevard" district added to the National Register of Historic places. Fine. It might get us recognition and some funding. Dandy. But this is the part I was looking for:

Most of the affected property is publicly owned but, unlike local historic districts, the designation would not affect private owners' ability to use their property as they choose.

One for two

Analogy alert! In fact, we have a twofer in The Journal Gazette's story about efforts to lure new employers for the workers left behind by Navistar's departure. The first is in the headline, "Navistar workers to serve as bait." While accurate and colorful, it's a little -- what? -- tactless? The second is in the opening paragraph:

Unbuckling the Bible Belt

OK, you cwazy wabbits. Slow down a little before you blow a gasket:

Sex in the Circle City is the best in the country, at least according to a Men's Health survey.

In a list of American cities "where guys have the best sex lives," Indianapolis came out on top as the most sexually satisfied city.

The survey blended several stand-alone factors, such as number of sex toys purchased, STD rate, condom sales and birth rate, and weights those to come up with the list.

The right stuff

I think The Journal Gazette's editorial page has discovered a new sin to pin on conservatives: hypocrisy by association. The JG doesn't think much of efforts by a local group to have Allen County Superior Court Judge Ken Scheibenberger thrown off the November ballot:
