Tailing the Komets

Some notes

Komets General Manager David Franke said Tuesday the team is open to a possible trade to add more offense, but nothing is imminent. The preference would be for a defenseman who can move the puck. Franke said he believes there's plenty of talent on the roster to contend once everyone gets healthy.

Franke did say the Komets are considering bringing in college or junior players, and the team has been in contact with Turner Cup playoffs MVP Justin Hodgman who has 19 goals and 51 points in 67 games this year with Erie of the OHL. He's also minus-29. Yikes!

Komets win a wild one

The Fort Wayne Komets had to win the game twice on Sunday. First, Kalamazoo scored with no time on the clock, getting three shots on goal after a faceoff with five seconds left. The red light never came on because time was expired, but referee Scott Hoberg ruled the goal had gone in at 19:59. The Komets salvaged the two points when Mathieu Curadeau scored 3:33 into the overtime to give the Komets the 5-4 win.

Komets coach Al Sims said he never got a chance to protest the late goal.

Thank you

Thank you so much to everyone who came out to Komet Kuarters today. We had over 250 people show up and we were constantly busy. Thank you to everyone for taking part and for all the kind words. They mean a tremendous about. If you weren't able to make it today, we're going to have another one in the near future and I'll keep  you posted.

BTW, Mac did indeed have a shoulder injury last night, but he's planning on playing tomorrow in Kalamazoo.

If you are listening from home

Bob and I talk about the books during the first intermission.

It will be interesting to see what the Komets' lineup is going to be tonight. Vince Tarantino is still out with an injury, meaning one more player is going to have to be a healthy scratch.

7:52: We just got the lineup and Brad MacMillan is the scratch.

Two things to remember

Don't forget the Bob Chase Frostbite Championships sled hockey tournament is going on at McMillen Park Ice Arena this weekend. If you've never seen something like this,  you'll be surprised at the speed and athleticism displayed. It's really something.

Also, Bob and I and Konstantin Shafranov, Colin Chaulk and Brad MacMillan will be doing a signing appearance at Komet Kuarters on Saturday starting at Noon. The players will be there by 1 p.m.

Komets and shootouts

Shootout does Ks in again

The good news is that the Fort Wayne Komets have gone 12 games and lost only once in regulation. The bad news is that they've only picked up one point in five of those games, losing in overtime or shootouts.

The Komets failed again to score in a shootout on Wednesday night, falling to the Muskegon Lumberjacks 4-3. The Lumberjacks pulled one point ahead of the Komets for second place in the International Hockey League. Port Huron is in first with 59 points followed by Musekgon with 58, Fort Wayne with 57 and Kalamazoo with 56.

Brendan Savage on the books

You can read about it here. I've been telling him for a while he should write one about Flint hockey. It would be great.

Don't forget Bob and I and Konstantin Shafranov, Colin Chaulk and Brad MacMillan will be at Komet Kuarters Saturday from 1-3

Some interesting stats

While the temperature dips, the Komets always turn up the heat in February, going 27-8-5 over the last three seasons. ... Injuries have already cost the Komet players 182 games so far this season. That must be a record... Including last Friday's game, the Komets are 21-1-3 when playing before crowds of 10,000 or more since the Memorial Coliseum was renovated in 2002. ... Heading into tonight's game, the Komets are 10-4-1 all-time on Friday the 13ths. ...

Today's post-mortem

Strange game tonight

Komets have dominated the shots and chances, but it's 3-3 after a really strange second period. Some folks in the press box said they heard a whistle before one of the goals went in. Did anyone else?

Bob Chase and I will be on Sound Off starting at 7 p.m. tonight on WISE, Ch. 33, or Comcast Ch. 13, talking about our books.

Also, we sent Mike Emrick a copy of Bob's book as he wrote the foreward for it. We'll be watching tomorrow to see if he mentions is during the Red Wings-Penguins game

So what did you think?

I thought they played very well, almost as good as Bill Zaniboni. Unlike some games of the recent past, I didn't feel like this was one where they made the goalie look good by hitting him in the chest. He was moving and made some great saves.

It's amazing how much difference Jake Pence and Kevin Bertram make. This allows the Komets to pair vet with rookie on all three defensive pairings, and it makes a huge difference. Boulay looked very comfortable with Bert out there.

Also impressed with Sebastien Laplante who was very solid when needed.
